8/19/25 Watchmen On The Wall – Chapter 9 What makes a great Watchman?

4 min read

What makes a great Watchman? Faithfulness to the task, boldness in the face of fear, and
discernment to know what is truly from God. This chapter highlights these key traits and
provides practical insights on how to cultivate them in our own lives.

Faithfulness, Boldness, and Discernment

Faithfulness is a cornerstone of the Watchman’s character. Remaining steadfast in our
calling, even when it’s difficult or unappreciated, is a mark of spiritual maturity. As Paul
encourages us in 1 Corinthians 15:58: Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work
of the Lord [always doing your best and doing more than is needed], being continually aware
that your labor [even to the point of exhaustion] in the Lord is not futile nor wasted [it is
never without purpose]. (AMP)

Boldness is equally important. Watchmen must speak God’s truth, even when it’s
uncomfortable. This doesn’t mean being harsh or confrontational, but it does mean standing
firm in love and truth.

Key Scripture
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound
mind. (2 Timothy 1:7 AMP)

Discernment helps Watchmen understand what is from God and what is not. In Hebrews
5:14, we learn that discernment comes through practice: But solid food is for the spiritually
mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good
and what is evil. (AMP)

The Great Watchman: Faithfulness, Boldness, and Discernment in God’s Service

Main Passage:

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58 (AMP) – Faithfulness
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP) – Boldness
  • Hebrews 5:14 (AMP) – Discernment

Opening & Introduction #

  • Welcome, prayer, and brief introduction to the Watchman’s role (Ezekiel 33:7; Isaiah 62:6–7).
  • Explain that today we will explore three qualities that make a great Watchman: Faithfulness, Boldness, Discernment.

Trait #1 – Faithfulness #

Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:58 (AMP)

“Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord… your labor in the Lord is not futile nor wasted.”

Old Testament Cross-References:

  • Nehemiah 4:6 – The people had a mind to work despite opposition.
  • Daniel 6:4–5 – Daniel’s faithfulness left no grounds for accusation.
  • Proverbs 20:6 – “A faithful man who can find?”

New Testament Cross-References:

  • Luke 16:10 – Faithful in little, faithful in much.
  • Revelation 2:10 – “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Discussion Prompt: How does faithfulness in small tasks prepare us for greater responsibilities? (Tie to Luke 19:17 – “Well done, good servant, because you have been faithful in very little…”)

Application Challenge:

  • Commit to one area this week where you will practice faithfulness — even if unnoticed.

Trait #2 – Boldness #

Key Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP)

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Old Testament Cross-References:

  • Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous… the Lord your God is with you.”
  • Jeremiah 1:7–8 – “Do not be afraid… for I am with you.”

New Testament Cross-References:

  • Acts 4:29–31 – The apostles prayed for boldness and the Spirit empowered them.
  • Ephesians 6:19–20 – Paul asks for prayer to speak boldly as he ought.

Practical Insight:

  • Boldness is not brashness; it’s Spirit-empowered courage rooted in love and truth.
  • Jesus modeled boldness in John 18:4–8 when He stepped forward to identify Himself to those arresting Him.

Discussion Prompt: Which situations in your life right now require boldness in speaking God’s truth?

Application Challenge:

  • Ask God for one specific opportunity this week to speak truth in love.

Trait #3 – Discernment #

Key Scripture: Hebrews 5:14 (AMP)

“Solid food is for the spiritually mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.”

Old Testament Cross-References:

  • 1 Kings 3:9 – Solomon asks for a discerning heart to govern God’s people.
  • Isaiah 11:2–3 – The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel, and might, knowledge and fear of the Lord.

New Testament Cross-References:

  • Philippians 1:9–10 – Discern what is best and pure.
  • 1 John 4:1 – Test the spirits to see if they are from God.

Practical Insight:

  • Discernment develops with practice: evaluating situations, words, and actions against God’s Word.
  • The Holy Spirit is the ultimate guide (John 16:13).

Discussion Prompt: What are some modern challenges where discernment is critical for believers?
Application Challenge:

  • Choose one current decision or situation and prayerfully weigh it through Scripture this week.

Integrating the Three Traits #

Connecting Faithfulness, Boldness, and Discernment:

  • Faithfulness keeps us steady in the assignment.
  • Boldness moves us to act and speak when required.
  • Discernment ensures we act and speak in alignment with God’s will.

Example from Scripture:

  • Nehemiah embodied all three: faithful to rebuild the wall (Nehemiah 4), bold against opposition (Nehemiah 6:3), discerning in strategy and alliances (Nehemiah 6:12–13).
