Daily Walk Series: Answering God’s Call to Higher Ground

5 min read

A Dream That Still Speaks

Over a decade ago, God gave me a dream that I still carry in my spirit. In the dream, I heard His voice clearly say, “Get to Higher Ground.” I could see flooding and disaster all around me—chaos unfolding in the very place where I stood. It wasn’t just a gentle invitation; it was an urgent call to move, to leave where I was, and to find safety.

At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the weight of His words, but I knew they carried significance. Years later, I watched as the very place He showed me in the dream came to ruin. It was a sobering realization—what He had warned me about was not just a metaphor, but a reality.

Looking back, I now see that God wasn’t just calling me to higher physical ground; He was calling me to a higher spiritual position. And I believe He is doing the same for all of us today.

God is calling us to higher ground in every area of our lives—our faith, our obedience, our perspective, and our purpose. He isn’t just pulling us away from danger; He’s positioning us, protecting us, preparing us, and setting us apart for His purpose.

God’s Call to Higher Ground: Positioning, Protection, Preparation, and Purpose

1. Positioning: Aligning Ourselves with God’s Perspective

When God calls us higher, He is shifting our position—pulling us out of complacency, out of danger, and into alignment with His will. Sometimes, we don’t recognize that where we are isn’t where we’re meant to stay. But God sees beyond what we can see.

In the valley, our vision is limited. But when we step up to higher ground, our perspective shifts—we start seeing things from God’s viewpoint rather than our own.

• Isaiah 55:8-9 (AMP) – “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.’”

Sometimes, what feels like a disruption in our lives is actually divine repositioning. God is moving us to protect us, to grow us, and to place us where we can be most effective for His kingdom.

2. Protection: Escaping the Coming Storm

In my dream, the flooding represented more than just a natural disaster—it was a warning. God sees ahead. He knows what’s coming, and when He calls us to higher ground, it’s because He is shielding us from things we may not yet understand.

• Proverbs 18:10 (AMP) – “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs to it and is safe and set on high [far above evil].”

Throughout Scripture, we see that God always calls His people out of danger before destruction comes.

• Noah was called to build an ark before the flood (Genesis 6).

• Lot was led out of Sodom before fire fell (Genesis 19).

• Jesus told His disciples to watch and be ready.

When God says, “Move,” it’s not always because something looks wrong in the moment—it’s because He sees the full picture.

3. Preparation: Getting Ready for What’s Ahead

Higher ground isn’t just a place of refuge—it’s a place of equipping. When God calls us higher, He is preparing us for something greater.

Moses had to climb Mount Sinai to receive the commandments. That wasn’t just about getting away from the people; it was about receiving a revelation that would change the course of history.

• 2 Timothy 2:21 (AMP) – “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things [which are dishonorable—disobedient, sinful], he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified (set apart for a special purpose and useful to the Master), prepared for every good work.”

Sometimes, God’s call to higher ground means we must let go of what is comfortable. We can’t take everything with us to the next level. Higher ground requires a higher level of faith, discipline, and trust.

4. Purpose: Positioned for Kingdom Impact

God doesn’t just call us to safety—He calls us to purpose. When He moves us to higher ground, it’s often because He is setting us apart for something greater.

We aren’t just saved from something; we are saved for something.

• Matthew 5:14 (AMP) – “You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Higher ground is a place of influence. It’s where God places us so that our lives can be a beacon for others.

Think about Joseph—his promotion in Egypt wasn’t just for him. It was for the survival of nations.

Think about Esther—her elevation to queen wasn’t for status. It was to save her people.

When God calls you higher, it’s never just about you. It’s about the impact He wants to make through you.

Are You Willing to Climb?

God’s call to higher ground is both an invitation and a challenge. It requires faith, obedience, and a willingness to let go of what we think is secure. But when we trust Him, He leads us to a place of safety, strength, and divine purpose.

If you sense God calling you higher, don’t hesitate.

Move when He says move.

Seek Him when He calls you.

Prepare for what’s ahead.

Your obedience today could be the key to your protection and purpose tomorrow.

Final Thought: Will You Answer the Call?

God’s call to higher ground is an invitation, not a demand. He won’t force us up the mountain, but if we are willing, He will meet us there.

Take a moment to reflect—where is God calling you to go higher today? And what’s stopping you?

Let’s climb together.
